Bejucos Americanos
2024
Bejucos are plants that unite, connect and elevate.
This series of illustrations highlight 5 species of bejucos native to the American continent. They were chosen according to the 5 members of my family. Each one has a particular use and a special relationship with the people who have learned to use its properties.
-
Amphilophium paniculatu, also known as mara, prieto, caratilla, liana de cuello o pico de pato with which baskets and crafts are woven.
-
Vitis tiliifolia, or bejuco de agua, agrás, uva de monte, chochogo and cocomecatl. Wines and delicacies are prepared with the grapes of this vine..
-
Pyrostegia venusta, called liana de llama, llamarada, trompetero naranja, bignonia de invierno or lluvia dorada that adorns walls and architectural ornaments.
-
Lagenaria siceraria, known as mate, porongo, calabaza, guaje o güiro. Its fruits are used to make musical instruments and containers.
-
Banisteriopsis caapi or bejuco del alma, de la muerte, ayahuasca, yagé or jagube. Master plant and one of the ingredients to make the remedy drink in traditional medicine.
Together with my brother and sister, we printed a two-ink silkscreen poster and in collaboration with Codicia we made a special agenda for 2024 that includes a calendar.
